This SPL meter is designed specifically for autosound competitions where high sound levels are commonplace. The SPL-162 measures sound levels from 89 dB to 162 dB and will record in flat, C, or A-weighting. A temporary hold mode permits the user to place the unit inside the vehicle during the test and capture the information on the digital display. Power is supplied by 8 AA batteries (alkaline or Ni-Cad rechargeable) or by 12VDC power supply. Ni-Cad batteries can be recharged with the power supply without removing the batteries from the case (batteries not included). Also includes belt-attachable carry case large enough to carry the power supply.

You can use it to measure noise levels in factories, schools, offices, and airports, or to check acoustics of studios, auditoriums, clubs, bars, and home theater installations. The Radio Shack meter is fairly consistent (standard deviation is about 0.5-1.0dB) and accurate - especially when measuring the midrange. It maxes out at 125dB. Various corrections are available on the internet in order to improve accuracy.
